NEPIC (The North East of England Process Industry Cluster) was established by the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Speciality, Petrochemical and Commodity Chemical companies to develop the long term future and improve the competitiveness of these sectors and the region.
Over 350 member companies are directly engaged in manufacturing or part of the integrated supply chain and includes five 5*universities and three Centres of Excellence. The combined sales earnings of the cluster exceed £9bn/yr and this is expected to grow by a further £5bn over the next decade.
The Tees Valley chemical complex is one of the largest integrated clusters in Europe with a combined sales turnover in excess of £4bn and over £2bn investment since the millennium. An infrastructure of pipelines and a series of formal and informal people networks ensures the smooth running of the supply chain from raw material to despatch. All the support services from engineering construction to patents and analytical are here.
Research is carried out in several major companies supported by five local universities and the Centre for Process Innovation at Wilton. The current research focus is on biofuels, renewable energy, and the hydrogen economy. |
